Project Description

Transportation Management in SAP (SAP TM)

Plan and execute transports simply and clearly in SAP TM

The SERKEM Solution in Detail

SAP Transportation Management (SAP TM) is an independent transport management system within the Supply Chain Execution Suite of SAP.

It maps the complete transport process from order collection over planning and execution up to freight costs calculation and settlement. Due to the modular structure, SAP TM can map the requirements of forwarders as well as the loading industry efficiently and scalable.

If SAP TM is used together with the other modules of the SAP SCE platform (SAP EWM and SAP EM), the transport- and warehouse management in TM and EWM can be used in conjunction with the event control from EM, as well as reacting to current developments in real time. So in the transport logistics, which covers about 5 percent of the turnover, potential savings can be realized through integrated processes.

The integration of SAP Transportation Management (SAP TM) with the SAP Extended Warehouse Management application (SAP EWM) makes it possible to integrate the transportation planning in SAP TM with the SAP-ERP-supply- and transport work and the SAP-EWM warehouse planning and execution.

There is to consider, that SAP TM is integrated with SAP EWM over SAP ERP. That means the data is not directly transmitted between SAP TM and SAP EWM.

The order-based transportation planning in SAP TM with the integration of SAP EWM is based on SAP-ERP-customer-orders and delivery.

The transport is planned in SAP TM but warehouse activities are planned and executed in SAP EWM. SAP ERP is between the two systems where customer orders, deliveries and transports were created.

Following elements are included:

  • ERP-TM-Order Integration
  • ERP-TM-Delivery Integration
  • ERP-TM-Transport Integration
  • ERP-EWM-Delivery Integration
  • ERP-EWM-Transport Integration

The delivery-based transport planning in SAP TM with the Integration of SAP EWM is based on SAP-ERP-deliveries and includes ERP-TM-delivery- and transport integration as well as ERP-EWM-delivery- and transport integration.

The following processes proceed exemplary in the separate systems:

SAP EWM

  • Creation of requirements for deliveries and orders
  • Creation of transport units
  • Warehouse planning and execution
  • Picking and packaging
  • Accounting of outgoing goods

SAP ERP

  • Create deliveries for customer orders
  • Create transports

SAP TM

  • Creation of delivery-based transport requirements and freight units
  • Implementation of transportation planning
  • Creation of freight bills

If the transportation planning proceeds in SAP EWM, the process is based on SAP-ERP-customer orders and deliveries.

The majority of activities proceed in this case in SAP EWM. These include:

  • Creation of delivery requirements and orders
  • Creation of transport units
  • Implementation of warehouse planning and execution
  • Commissioning and packaging
  • Accounting of outgoing goods

At the beginning of the process only the deliveries for customer orders in SAP ERP were created.  There, also the creation of the transport proceeds, following to the accounting of outgoing goods in SAP EWM. For the cost calculation and freight accounting, the transports will be finally transferred to SAP TM.
